What Makes Maggie Our Mentor of the Month? Maggie is: SUPPORTIVE and CREATIVE.
Maggie, one of our new mentors, from Citi, knows what it takes to make a difference with her mentee.
Although Stephanie was a little shy when first meeting Maggie, she continues to find her “voice” by talking about issues most important to her. As a mentor, Maggie continually encourages her by listening and being very attentive. When asked, “What is the biggest problem that you, as a 10th grader, have faced at ACHS this year? Stephanie revealed she was struggling with math. Maggie then introduced her to a close friend that is a math tutor. But Maggie didn’t stop there. When Stephanie also expressed her concern about how dirty the gym floor was, Maggie jumped into action stating, “I will inquire at work to see what can be done as a volunteer effort to get the gym cleaned. We have helped clean and paint other schools throughout NYC. I’ll find out how your school can be included in the program.” Stephanie’s school made renovations to the gym the following week, but Maggie’s desire to help was not lost upon her mentee.
Maggie has also shown her knack for creativity in the iMentor Online Donor Drive where she created a page entitled, “Art for iMentor.” Her project joined forces with NYC artists where, “For every $10 donated, the donor received one (1) entry for their chance to win original art by participating visual artists in NYC.” Maggie has had over $700 in donations with more coming in.
By being supportive and creative, she has gone above and beyond to exemplify that being a part of the iMentor community isn’t just being a mentor; she has actively recruited many of her friends and colleagues to join her in making a difference. This is why Maggie Hernandez has been chosen as May’s Mentor of the Month!
